Travel Guide: Tulum, Mexico

I’m back home after a long and wonderful vacation in Tulum, a beautiful beach town located on the Yucatán Peninsula (about an hour and a half south of Cancun). Tulum is a sleepy town with lots of cabana-style hotels and really amazing restaurants. The Mayan ruins are situated right on the beach, providing interesting history (not to mention some gorgeous photo ops). But the best part about Tulum is the beach (oh, the beach!!). My photos really do not do it justice.

Next week I am going to post a little travel guide with recommendations for where to stay, what to eat, and what to do in Tulum. In the meantime, check out some pics of the beach and the town:

Year In Review

Friday, December 30th, 2011

2011 was a fantastic year and I had a great time putting together a few highlights (via the ever-inadequate documentation from my iphone). Looking back I realize that I am very lucky to have been able to spend the past year with such amazing people! I am so looking forward to 2012 and the adventures that the new year will bring.

{our fur-ocious guard cat is in a holiday mood}

It is finally starting to feel like Christmas time to me. The decorations are up, the roomies are leaving for home, and I’ve got eggnog in my coffee. This weekend I am planning to buckle down and actually start my Christmas shopping. So far the only holiday shopping I’ve done was picking up my office party white elephant gift from CVS (a lava lamp, so awesome). I’m anticipating a busy weekend, but I am ready and armed with Michael Buble’s Christmas album and (way too many) rice crispy treats! Happy weekend!

Trimming the Tree

Friday, December 2nd, 2011

This weekend the roommates and I are hosting a holiday party complete with homemade eggnog and a chocolate fountain (if not now, then when?). So to prepare, we spent some time last night decorating our Christmas tree. As it turns out, Scott is quite the skilled tree trimmer and therefore spent a bit of time revising some of my ornament-hanging choices (the secret is creating depth). As of now, the tree is almost finished but we still need to find the perfect topper. I have no doubt that the weekend will be a great success, and I am looking forward the music, friends, and “faux-fireplace” dvd at the party.

Also, the answer is yes, I did get a fourth birthday cake. It was chocolate and Erin made it from scratch. And it was really delicious.

three birthday cakes

Okay, so technically I had two birthday cakes, but I am counting the birthday creme brulee that we had at Angelina in downtown Detroit, because it came with a candle. Wow, I can’t believe I turned 28 this weekend! I think this officially makes me an adult (contrary to the fact that I ate cake for breakfast the past three mornings). My birthday usually falls pretty close to Thanksgiving day, so I am always fortunate to be surrounded by friends and family. This year I celebrated in Detroit with a perfect rainy-day birthday. Suj and I saw a movie (the Descendants, it was awesome), shopped for records, and finished with a nice meal. Now I am back in DC and looking forward to a fourth birthday cake when I celebrate with the roomies. I hope that the final cake will be almost as amazing as Z’s dinosaur sprinkle masterpiece!

This year I have a lot to be thankful for. Above all, I am so blessed to be surrounded by loving, supportive, and inspiring people. I am a lucky girl. Happy Thanksgiving.

happy weekend

Friday, November 18th, 2011

It looks like it is going to be a cold weekend in DC. I plan to enjoy the last days of autumn colors and break out some warmer fashions as we head into winter. I am also looking forward to trying some of Erin’s much-hyped apple french toast at Sunday brunch. I will report back!

the perfect mug

While we were in New York, Sujeet and I had lunch at this great little Middle Eastern restaurant in the SoHo called 12 Chairs. The food was excellent (I took pictures, of course) and the atmosphere was just what I needed after shopping on a cold morning. I was so happy to sit at a cozy table and sip coffee from a big porcelain mug. In fact, I enjoyed the experience so much that I have begun a quest to find big mugs just like the ones at the restaurant. So far I have not located anything even close to those wonderful, thick mugs (thanks a lot, internet). However, I did a little research and I think that the classic “Victor mug” may be my best bet. Fortunately, mug season is just beginning and I have plenty of time to track down the perfect one.

City and Country

Tuesday, November 15th, 2011

I had a lovely trip to New York this weekend! I can’t believe I live so close to the city yet rarely visit. I rode the train (successfully!) and arrived late Thursday night. Our good friend, Jamie, was kind enough to offer Sujeet and me his apartment for a few nights. We spent Friday walking, shopping, and generally enjoying the city. On Saturday, we hopped on metro north and rode to an adorable little cabin where we celebrated Jamie’s 30th birthday. I had the best time relaxing, playing games, and eating the most delicious food (Jamie’s dad is a fantastic cook!). The weekend was over too soon and now I am back in DC. Luckily, I have some photos to remember the highlights…
