Simple solution: jewelry dish

My bedside table is something of a problem area for me, with jewelry and hair pins scattered about. A few weeks ago I found this beautiful nautical soap dish at GoodWood, one of my favorite vintage furniture shops in DC. The dish serves as a perfect jewelry holder and it makes smile when I see it. Problem solved.

busy week!

Tuesday, May 22nd, 2012

This has been a crazy week and a few things (ahem, this blog) have been a little neglected. Good news is the balcony is finished and it looks amazing! (Post to come!) Now I am getting ready to visit Tennessee for the holiday weekend. I am so excited to see my good friends, Laura and Matthew, get hitched! I am also looking forward to staying at a haunted hotel in Chattanooga and then a quick trip to Nashville.   For now, here are a few things I have been enjoying in DC:

I am a girl who loves herself a project. The latest on the list is revamping our balcony. We have a great, huge balcony off our back door and we have basically done nothing with it for the two years that I have lived in the house. But no longer! I have some big ideas (but trying to stay budget conscious) and I am excited to create a space for relaxing and entertaining this summer. Here are a few photos with some outdoor inspiration.

Style notes: Romance

one / two / three / four

I am reading The Paris Wife this month for my book club and it has put me in a very romantic mood lately. The book is told from the perspective of Hadley Hemingway and documents her time living in Paris with Ernest. I am really enjoying the book so far and it has made me a little nostalgic for long strolls and leisure afternoons with mon amour. It also inspired me to put together this carefree, romantic look.

Style Notes: Date Night Edition

Thursday, March 1st, 2012

1. dress, 2. bangles, 3. cardigan, 4. shoes

Spring is coming and romance is in the air at the U street house. One of the roomies (who will remain unnamed) has a hot date tonight and it inspired me to put together this “date night” look. Too often date night in DC means leaving the office and dashing to dinner or cocktails in your business wear. Instead, why not opt for something breezy and feminine with a little bangle bling. Don’t worry, it’s still office appropriate (a girl’s gotta work after all!).

Music Thursday: The Dodos

Thursday, January 5th, 2012

Putting together a “best of” list this year seemed a little overwhelming. (Not to mention I am getting a bit of a late start. Wow, January snuck up on me!) Instead, I’ve opted to share my favorite album of the year: The Dodo’s No Color. I love every song on this record. This album spent more time on my record player than it did in the sleeve and I still can’t get enough. The songs are generally upbeat, with interesting rhythms and guitar work. It’s the perfect background music for my morning routine (or as I cook, or clean, or paint my nails, or thumb through a magazine … you get the idea). Stream music, watch videos, and even snag a free song download at their website.

While we are on the topic of favorites, I might as well share my new favorite accessories:

Color Blocked Nails

When I need to relax I love to either take a bubble bath or polish my nails (uber girly, I know), and yesterday, the nails won. I usually stick to solid polish, but was feeling a little feisty and thought I’d change it up with this color blocked design. I really like the color combination of red and gold and the design is so simple.

My younger brother, Jaxon, gave me this bottle of red polish for Christmas last year, and I just love it. I am totally sold on the Revlon colors. They dry fast, usually only need one coat, and are pretty cheap ($3-4 per bottle).
